During a recent trip while waiting to meet some friends I stopped by Plaza to meet with another friend, yes that's what I do when I go to PR, rest and meet with friends. We decided to meet at Chili's and because habits are hard to break, I tried their mojito. It hit the spot, and for $5 I'll probably be back for more when I'm there, although I hear that Chili's at Plaza is now closed for renovation.

Jaguar

<img style="display:block; I had the opportunity to visit a few weeks ago and yes, to my surprise the had a full bar that serve Mojitos! So I ventured to try a mojito at a Mediterranean Bistro. I had (3) mojitos that night, it was happy hour after all. Well usually happy hour means two for one, but I manage to get a third one because the bus boy was not paying attention and filled my almost empty drink with water!
The mojitos at Borgello Bistro are good, run of the mill mojitos that you can find at several South Florida locations such as Dan Marino Sunset, the Yard House, and Jake's Gastro pub.

Nothing to this point can compare to a real mojito as the ones you can find at Ortanique on the Mile. I'm not much of a beer drinker, I enjoy beer with pizza and at a BBQ but not when I go out with friends. This weekend I had the pleasure to see Wicked at the Arsht Center, a fabulous musical, that I highly recommend.

My friends and I went to the Yard House for drinks and a some food. Of course I had to try their Mojito, it wasn't spectacular but it was refreshing. It is obviously not made from scratch, I'm pretty sure they use a mojito mix. The mojito at the Yard House at $8.75 is comparable to those at Jake's Gastro Pub and Dan Marino's Sunset Place. The food and the service at 11:30 pm were good as well. I was fortunate that Joel, the mojito king, was bar tending that day and I was finally able to try his highly recommended Mojito Atlantico. The Mojito Atlantico' made with Ron Atlantico an aged small batch dark rum from the Dominican Republic and a "secret" ingredient, it is worth the $$. The Mojito Atlantico is smooth with a hint of spice that lingers in your palate after every sip. It is certain that I will continue to drink Mojito Atlantico's every time Joel is there, whether for an original mojito or a Mojito Atlantico Ortanique is the place to be and the food is absolutely amazing!
Here is Joel working his magic!

Ortanique on the mile

Is it possible that my quest for the best mojito in SoFla has suddenly come to an end? The answer is yes, it is possible. After a wonderful outing on Saturday night I can say that thus far the best mojito in SoFla can be found at Ortanique on the Mile.

What is interesting is that Ortanique is one of my favorite restaurants in Miami, however I have always been more interested in finding a great wine to pair their wonderful food. Even when attending private events at Ortanique's I don't recall ever having a mojito.

The Ortanique Mojito is just perfect, the perfect amount of rum, the perfectly sweet, and yet perfectly sour, just perfect.

While engaged in fabulous conversation with chef owner Cindy Hutson, I found out that the mojito I tried was not even made by the Mojito Master, Joel Garcia. Now I have an excuse to go back and try Joel's mojitos. While at the restaurant I received a text from a friend that was very eager to suggest that I try a mojito atlantico, yet another excuse to go back.

The message is that even though Ortanique on the Mile has the best mojito in SoFla that does not mean the end of this blog. I have several excuses to go back, excuses to try other places to see how they compare, and I will make it my mission to convince them to create a Passion fruit mojito. You would have to agree that it will be so convenient to drive to the Gables for my passion fruit mojito fix than flying 1500 miles to SJ; I'm just saying...

Bahama Breeze (Kendall)

This week's dinner with friends took me to Bahama Breeze, another opportunity to broaden my search for good mojitos in SoFla.
Nothing spectacular about mojitos at Bahama Breeze. Ok for the prize and the food was good. When I asked the waiter for a mojito, he asked: "do you want it regular or strong". What kind of question is that? A mojito is a mojito, and I just want an awesome mojito, with the right amount of lime, mint, sugar and rum.
The mojito at Bahama Breeze was made with dark rum, which made it's color a little darker than expected.
My friend suggested that I develop a rating scale, I'm trying to figure out how to do that.

-- Posted from my iPhone

Soyka 55th Street

On today's agenda brunch at Soyka. It is customary for brunch to have a Mimosa, a Bellini or even a Bloody Mary, however I wanted to be daring and asked for a mojito. The waiter was very pleasant and responded " our bartender just came in today to make you a mojito".
The mojito was just right; right amount of sweetness, lime and mint. It was so good that I actually ordered another one, the second mojito was not as good, hence my theory that a good mojito depends on the bartender. The second mojito was bitter from the lime zest, nothing a little xtra sugar couldn't fix. For the $11per Mojito price I expected each mojito to be consistently perfect. The search continues...

-- Posted from my iPhone

TGIF @ The Falls

Today's Happy Hour with the usual suspects took me to TGIF at The Falls in SoFla. I was a little skeptical about my chances to find mojitos in the bar menu, but I was pleasantly surprised that they did. I can not say for sure that the Ultimate Mojito is available nationwide or if it is just available locally.

I tried their Ultimate Mojito, just your standard straight forward mojito. It was my impression that the bartending staff uses either sprite or 7up instead of simple syrup. It is my opinion that this makes the drink sweeter than usual. Also they do not take the time to muddle the mint and did not have enough lime.
Overall after I added a little more lemon the Ultimate Mojito was ok for the $4 happy hour price. I will not pay full price for it.
After that I tried their Blackberry Mojito. This mojito version was actually a nice refreshing drink, but not deserving of being called a mojito. It lacked the mint and lime kick, and it was not appealing to look at. My recommendation keep the drink call it something else.

-- Posted from my iPhone

Havana Harry's (Kendall)

My search for good SoFla Mojitos took me to Havana Harry's (Kendall Drive). A convenient location for Friday happy hour after work since it is only a few blocks away. Out of eight Mojitos consumed we had to send one back, but overall they were pretty good for the $7 price. Minor inconsistentcies in flavor noted depending on the bartender, also in the amount served per glass, again depending on the bartender.
I think the inconsistencies were due to their new staff and the fact that they are still not fully staffed.
The menu offers a variety of favorite Cuban dishes, some of them with a twist. Alhough I was a little disappointed that they did not have a Cuban frita on the menu and the service was slow, I will be back for the Mojitos. You should too, the service will get better as they get fully staffed, or so I hope...

-- Posted from my iPhone

Monty's in Coconut Grove

Last night, I met some friends at Monty's in Coconut Grove, FL. Whether it originated from pirates, slaves, or at La Bodeguita del Medio, today we have a refreshing cocktail that entices even those that are not avid drinkers. Well it also entices those that were avid drinkers too, Ernest Hemingway was a big fan of the drink.

In October 2008 I was on one of my weekend trips to PR and a good friend took me to dinner at Raices in Old San Juan, that's where it all started for me. I looked at the menu and I saw they had a drink called Mojito Enamorao' (Mojito in Love), my first thought was "leave it to my fellow puerto ricans to alter a well known Cuban Drink", I asked the waiter what exactly was a Mojito Enamorao and he explained to me that it had Passion fruit juice in it. It made perfect sense to me, and since I love passion fruit juice, I decided to try it. It was utterly delicious, and from that day on I've been hooked. Upon my return to Miami I decided to drink Mojitos every time I have the chance. Thus far I have found good Mojitos in quite a few places; Mojito's Restaurant at the Dolphin Mall is a good start for newbies, the traditional Mojito is very good and you get to keep the souvenir glass if you wish, since the drink is so big you probably only have one. They have a variety of Mojitos but I prefer the traditional version.

I was pleasantly surprised that Bucca di Beppo a family style Italian Restaurant has a really good Lemon Basil Mojito. Bucca is a nationwide chain the drink appears to be standard in their menu but I can only attest for the bartenders in Davie and Miami Lakes, FL.

Dan Marino's Restaurant at Sunset Place as well as Jake's the Gastropub both in South Miami have pretty good Mojitos, but I have to do further research on that as I have a theory that it depends on the bartender. I will keep you posted...

Raices Old San Juan

I recently returned from another trip to PR, as usual one of my stops was at Raices in Old San Juan and once again I was not disappointed. During my trip I was with some friends from FL, meeting some friends that were traveling from TX, and some of my high school friends. My goal was to introduce them to Raices fabulous Mojito Enamorao (passion fruit mojito), by far the best passion fruit mojito in PR and in the US. I particularly enjoy my mojito in a cacharrita (tin can), which goes against all bar-tending rules but it really adds to the ambiance of " puerto rican countryside" (campo) that Raices exudes. Its hard to stay on your seat when the waitresses and waiters come around with their panderos and sing to the rhythm of plena, which also add a little bit of "cultural spice" to the place.

The food excellent as usual, we ordered the Festival Tipico as appetizer since our mission this time was mainly to concentrate on the mojitos. However, I can recommend the Tornado, Chuletas Khan Khan (pork chops) and the mofongo, and the plantain soup. In reading some of the postings in Trip Advisor someone commented that chuletas khan khan where fried. Seriously, that's what chuletas are all about. I suggest that when looking at the menu and deciding what to eat, ask the waiters and waitresses for ideas.

I was very happy to learn that they are expanding their location, this will help with the long wait. I had the opportunity to have a private tour of the expansion and believe me it going to be awesome. I can wait to be back and introduce more friends to Raices Mojito Enamorao and the great food, service and ambiance the place has to offer.

Mojitos: why the fascination??

After a nice evening with friends and following their encouragement I have decided to share my quest for good Mojitos with the world. I am not sure when or where my fascination with this tropical drink started, after all I've never been a rum drinker.

Actually I really used to dislike rum, maybe because I learned to make a mean rum and coke by age five, not by choice but because that was my father's drink of choice and he always asked me to fix them for him. Growing up in Puerto Rico you are exposed to rum, you get used to the smell of the sugar cane, driving through Arecibo and Camuy by the Palo Viejo, Ron Llave and Ron Granado distillery, or the small Barrilito destillery in my hometown of Bayamon, or the view of Bacardi in Catano, and the king of all Puerto Rican rums Ron Don Q from Ponce, PR and the Serralles family. Growing up in Puerto Rico you learn to be loyal to the Pina Colada, but even with the large number of Cubans in the island, I never heard of Mojitos.

Even after living in Miami for many years, I never heard of Mojitos until the late 90's at a family gathering, an even then I did not try it, because I didn't like rum!!

I think Mojito's became popular in Miami, with the advent of trendy South Beach, maybe it was the movie The Mambo Kings, maybe it was the Estefan's they made everything trendy and the opened Lario's Cuban Restaurant is South Beach, I am not sure and it really does not matter.

What matters is how, when, and why the Mojito has become my drink of choice, and it all started with a caipirinha, who knew! A good friend introduced me to Caipirinhas, the official cocktail of Brazil, with cachaca, sugar and lime. I loved it, and she mentioned that basically the Caipirinha was the Brazilian version of a Mojito, seriously she said that. In reality, it is not the Brazilian version of the Mojito, but it did peaked my curiosity about the Cuban drink.
